I am still decompressing.
I am 3 full days into Summer Vacation 2012 and though we didn't make it to the lake, it was a whirlwind of a weekend. For teachers, the weeks leading up to the highly anticipated last day of school are absolutely packed to the brim with activities and deadlines. I certainly don't get any sympathy from anyone but by the time July starts, I feel like I am more than ready for a break.
Friday kicked it off with a big move to Katie's new house. It is BEAUTIFUL and within just a few minutes, I felt at home there. I love it and though I will probably not ever move from my house, the excitement of the day was not lost on me. I am so glad I have a sister to share these big events with. Their little family will grow into their new home beautifully and I will visit as often as my BIL will allow, especially considering it is 6 minutes from home, 4 minutes from work. It's perfect!
Saturday was a big wedding at the Gates and what better way to enjoy a Winnipeg sunny afternoon than sitting on the banks of the Assiniboine enjoying a cocktail and hor doeurves. The wedding was touching and a chance for Chad to catch up with some old colleagues. We laughed and danced and enjoyed some kid free time in an absolutely beautiful setting.
Sunday, we decided to hit Brds Hill Beach...along with 1000's of other people celebrating Canada Day in the sun. Chad and I played water taxi countless times as we transported the kids back and forth to frog island where even I was caught up in the thrill of the hunt. The beach is a great opportunity to enjoy the kids and we had a blast, frogs overflowing in our buckets. It was packed as we left to head to Katie's to celebrate a few very overdo birthdays. The Giesbrecht crew get togethers are always fun, with all of the grandkids together and laughing. Sadie and Ives played in the sprinkler and pool for hours. We filled up on chicken fajitas and homemade pico de gallo and guacamole. A homemade lemon meringue ice cream pie rounded out the evenng in the heat and sunshine. Honestly, I think barbecues are one of my favorite things in life. Sadly, the night ended abruptly and with a little panic. My boy was on a swing in the backyard and managed to catch a pretty serious whack on his elbow. He came to me in tears and absolutely white as a ghost. He seemed panicked and more than a bit frightened and obviously, in quite a bit of pain. Poor guy!
We spent the day today at the hospital. After waking up and seeing that the swelling had not yet subsided and he was still favoring it quite a bit, we figured the ER was a good idea. He could bend the arm but it was easy to see that it pained him. The swelling looked un-natural and almost as if the elbow could be dislocated. Ty and I sat together for 4 hours in total. We made the most of it and we laughed and played video games on our gadgets together. He taught me how to play Subway Surf and I explained what the multiple police officers were doing there with their latest arrests. I knew he was nervous and what we were both not saying was how terrified we were that he might wind up in a cast on the very first weekend of the summer. It was a long and anxious wait and despite the Dr.'s suspicions, there was no break. Yahoo!
Summer is officially kicking off with the first scheduled lunch playdate for the kiddies. To all of you that are also starting the summer off, enjoy these sunny days, make memories and laugh with your kiddies. Happy July!
